Once settlers came from outside the Native Hawaiian culture, Hawaii
saw the plantation system take hold throughout its islands. At the
heart of Oahu's plantation system was the village of Waipahu, which
later became a sugar mill town located between the West and East Lochs
of Pearl Harbor. Today, Waipahu has flourished into a centrally
located small town with distinct cultural roots, which have arguably
been lost in the development of surrounding communities. As a result,
Waipahu's Plantation Village is a major island attraction for locals
and tourists alike as it, as well as the community, draws on the
traditions of historic Hawaii.
Connected to the rest of Oahu by the island's two major throughways,
Interstate H-1 and Farrington Highway, Waipahu is surrounded by the
newer subdivisions of Waikele with its world famous outlet shopping
center and golf course, and the ever-expanding communities of Pearl
City and Kapolei. Waipahu's location lends itself to a variety of
easily accessible opportunities in education and health care, as well
as employment with a relatively equal number of residents commuting to
work and working in the town itself.
While only a few Waipahu condominiums are located in the heart of the
town, the newer growth areas of Royal Kunia and Village Park have
embraced the most recent Waipahu condominium developments. Regional
parks are found throughout these areas and no doubt have been an
appeal to Waipahu condo and homeowners, who enjoy both the relaxing
ambiance of living near nature and some of the lowest median condo
prices on the island.
