Even though Kapolei is officially a part of the City and County of Honolulu, it has been designated as Oahu's unofficial "second city". Translated from the Hawaiian phrase "Pu'u o Kapolei" meaning "hill" (pu'u) and "beloved Kapo" (kapo lei), the sister of Pele, Kapolei sits on the edge of the Leeward Coast and Oahu's southeast shore overlooked by the Waianae Mountains. The community's home amidst the natural beauty of the Waianae Range southern foothills prompted construction of new neighborhoods with Kapolei condominiums, homes, community centers, and healthcare and educational facilities in the late 1980s. In order to create a self-sufficient community, commercial developments followed shortly thereafter. Today, the city is the site of the largest continuing development on the island and as a result has made way for State and County government offices, large shopping and entertainment centers, and a budding tourism industry with such attractions as the Hawaiian Adventures Waterpark.
As the community creates the necessary infrastructure to become the second largest urban area on Oahu, many Kapolei condo and homeowners continue to make the commute to Honolulu for its rich employment industry. In recent years, state, county, and city planning officials have focused efforts on relieving traffic congestion between the two metropolitan areas while furthering Kapolei's job and business opportunities in the tourist industry with the emergence of such projects as Oahu's south shore ferry connecting Kapolei with downtown Honolulu and Waikiki.
The older developed communities of Makikilo and Ko Olina, the resort area formerly known as West Beach, have become associated with Kapolei as it has grown. Makakilo condominiums and homes sit atop a hill above Kapolei, making them prime retirement spaces for those seeking quality vistas at affordable prices. Ko Olina condominiums and homes rest near the Pacific Ocean on Kapolei's west side and are more often owned by seasonal inhabitants, such as tourists and "snow birds".
The communities and natural beauties surrounding Kapolei have proven to be incentives for future development, however, Hawaiian officials' plans to form Oahu's "second city" has been the main driving force for the rise in condominium and home investment. Despite investors playing a large role in the area's growth, said officials continue to incorporate the creation of affordable Kapolei condos and homes into the area's overall development plan which has effectively attracted a diverse population of condo and homeowners to the area. |
