Ewa (pronounced eva) was first established as a population center for the south shore sugarcane industry. While sugar cane is no longer grown in the area, Ewa stands as a growing "modern" community with a building healthcare, education, and entertainment infrastructure. Positioned between Honolulu and Oahu's "second city" Kapolei, as well as near Pearl Harbor and other military bases, Ewa serves as the island's fastest developing suburb village. Even as it continues to fit its mold as the largest populated central community along Oahu's south shore, Ewa is most commonly used as a directional term by locals and Native Hawaiians to designate west, while Diamond Head is often used to refer to the east.
With Interstate H-1 and Farrington Highway, the south shore's main east-west thoroughfare, running directly through the area has made it ideal for commuting blue-collar workers, business professionals, and military service people. According to the 2000 United States Census, 63.8% of Ewa condo and homeowners were married couples and this percentage continues to rise as development enhances. In addition, Ewa has a growing number of mid-size families (4-5) have been moving into the neighborhood to take advantage of Ewa's alluring educational opportunities consisting of 1 high school, 1 middle school, and 6 elementary schools.
As the focus of recent development on Oahu, the area is home to many brand new Ewa condominiums and homes. Despite such development, Ewa Beach has kept its pristine beauty and seclusion from island visitors, making it a main draw for both new coming and established Ewa residents. Regardless of it attracting fewer tourists than most other Oahu areas, the tourism industry has found a niche in Ewa with "The Hawaiian Railway", the island's only active rail system that offers educational rides along the historical tracks. A museum also provides an adventure into the rich railroad history of Oahu complete with artifacts, memorabilia, and more. Future development may solidify Ewa's place as an island transportation hub as plans for a light rail system progress.
